Sebastian/Ellie and Andreas fall in love, and external attributions are irrelevant, what’s important is how they see and understand each other. The film maintains a punkish underlying tension towards the pseudo-tolerant IKEA world of adults and creates queer islands in space and time in the form of dream, song, and dance sequences, which function as a suitable frame for the non-binary protagonist: ambivalent idylls of brief duration, utopian refuges as part of the narrative order. (Jan Künemund) – “There is no moment in the film where its goal is to change the entrenched opinions of the audience.  Bergsmark isn’t trying to do a good deed. It’s about the most emotional possible depiction, about tears, blood, sweat, urine, spit and sperm: fluids that flow from the internal to the external—just like Ellie.” (Aileen Pinkert, sissy)
